Mouth sores also known as canker sores can appear any time and many times for no apparent reason. These oral sores are very annoying and painful as they create an obstacle to eating, swallowing and talking.

Proper oral hygiene is essential to prevent mouth sore. However they can occur for multiple reasons such as a bite or intake of certain medications or certain foods especially hot and spicy.

So should you directly approach a doctor for the treatment?

Although over-the-counter treatments or visiting the doctor can help, home remedies can also reduce pain and irritation and promote healing. But amongst all, coconut oil for mouth ulcers is one of the most trusted treatment since ages.

Why Coconut Oil for Canker Sores?

The oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Its antimicrobial properties help inhibit the action of bacteria and helps to fight harmful strains of bacteria in the mouth and prevent lesions from becoming infected. Whereas its anti-inflammatory properties reduce swelling and pain.

How to use coconut oil for mouth ulcer?

There are 3 ways coconut oil can be used to heal mouth ulcer.

  1. Oil Rinsing: Take a spoonful of coconut oil and rinse for 5 minutes. This is an ancient method called as oil rinse.
  2. Using Cotton Swab or Cotton Ball: Another way to treat mouth ulcer using coconut oil is to take a piece of cotton and dip it in the oil and press it to remove excess oil. Then, apply the cotton soaked in the oil over the canker sore carefully so that a thick layer is formed. Repeating this 3 or 4 times a day helps to heal the lesion.
  3. Direct Application: To use this home remedy on the canker sore, first you should clean the mouth, apply a little oil with your finger and let it remain for a few minutes. Then you can remove it with water until there is no residue left in the mouth.

When to approach a doctor?

In most cases, it is possible to quickly cure a canker sore without going to the doctor by using coconut oil as mentioned above.

However, if the discomfort is prolonged or tends to become more complicated then you should definitely visit a doctor.

  • You have multiple mouth sores.
  • New canker sores are formed before the others have completely healed.
  • The sore does not go away even after two weeks.
  • The pain is unbearable.
